Hot start issue (Data log included)

Page 1 of 3Next

I am new to posting on this forum however I have read many posts when setting up my fitech and it has been very helpful. Keep up the great work.

I have a ford 393w stroker engine with the 600hp power adder fitech efi. It starts great when cold and runs great as well. I have drove over 100 miles since installing my fitech as it runs great. However, if you shut the car off warm (north of 150 degrees) and leave the car for a moment (like to buy gas, etc.) the car will not start again unless you allow it to cool off for a couple hours. If the car does start when warm it will rev (between 250-1800 rpm) erratically (usually shutting itself off) and then will begin to idle normally after about 10-15 seconds.

I am not running timing control

I am getting good tach signal

I have adjusted cranking fuel, prime, and cranking iac without any improvement

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not know what to try next. Thank you.

This data log includes a cold start and a warm start when it actually does start but does the erratic revving.

Cranking tune is one of the hardest to understand.  I myself am still dialing mine in.  My current setup is 15 degrees initial timing, prime fuel at 200 and have backed off crank fuel at 170 a lot.  I have found when it doesn't want to start hot it is flooded horribly.  Backing the cranking fuel down until it won't start due to lack of fuel then bring back in.

Thank you for replying. Any help goes a long way. I should also add, that if I allow the engine to run until warm (170 degrees+) and shut off the engine, and then immediately start it back, it will run. However if I allow the engine to sit for a few minutes, then it will not start back until it is cool. I have adjusted the cranking fuel and prime fuel again today and i cannot get it to start unless it cools or I immediately start it back.

I don't know what else to try.

Again thank you for your help.

Does it start with starting fluid?  Do you think it is flooded?

Usually when these things don't want to start it is from too much fuel.  The prime shot is a factor.  Some disable Prime Shot.  I have not had success with that.

I don't think it is flooded. I know I am getting code 105 and 36 from time to time.  I think code 36 is rpm noise? What is code 105?

I still do not see how it could hot start if the car has just been shut off, but in a few minutes after it has been shut off it will not start back, if wire interference is the issue.

Blue wire has been covered in Aluminum foil but has not seemed to help.

Thanks for the help.

Blue wire interference will show up on the handheld as very erratic or high RPM readings.  Make sure to use proper shielding and ground the shielding.  There is a great write up in the Electrical section.  Also make sure coil is not mounted near the ECU.  Common on Ford's to have issues when coil is mounted on the intake.  Keep the blue wire off of the spark plug wires.  Allthough I do not think this has anything to do with Hot start issues.

Any updates on this one? I'm having the same issue!

No I do not have any updates to this issue. I have now been fighting this issue for months. Still starts great when cold, but will not start when warm after it has sat for a while.

New installation of the 300003 and having the same issue.  Cold starts just find, run fine with some up and down on the RPM's when holding a steady rpm's above idle.  After reaching operating temperature and sets for a few minutes, it won't start unless I cycle the prime shot several time.  It will also start if I manually prime the throttle body with fuel.   The system seems to remove the prime shot after reaching operating temperature.

I had a similar hot start problem on the wife's go street 600.  I put a voltage gauge in the cab to monitor the voltage going to the fitech and found the voltage going under 10 volts while cranking the engine over.  I put in an Odyssey 850 CCA battery and Voilà! Voltage never gets under 11 volts while cranking and starts on first try every time!
