Run too rich on warm start only

Page 1 of 2Next

Hi,

I purchased and installed the #31003 kit (Go Street EFI 400Hp + inline pump) on my car and it started right up and ran very good.

The only problem I have is when I start it with the engine warm. It starts but runs way too rich and I have to play with the pedal to keep it running. Even after 5 minutes it never gets back to the target AFR, I have to stop it. I have to wait for about 45 minutes till the temperature drop down and then it starts and runs good again forever. If I start it below cyl temp of around 140 it will start and run perfectly even after it reaches the fully warm state. So if I want to use the car I can’t stop it until I’m sure I can leave it cool down before restarting it. (not ideal when I have to fill it up at the gas station…)

I tried to decrease the “afterstart”, “warmup” and “crank fuel” without any success. I then put it back to 0 value. I then tried to decrease “fuel 130F cyl” and “fuel 195F cyl” but the value are already below the min value of 25. (value was 12.5). I also reduce the "prime fuel mult" to -100 without any good results. Whatever the changes I do, it changes nothing.

I have no fault

I adjusted correctly the IAC and it’s between 3-10 steps at warm idle.

I don’t use the timing control option

I have the Pertronix electronic conversion in my distributor with a good 12v RPM signal to the FiTech ECU.

It confuses me because the car runs really good in all conditions, it accelerates good and has a smooth idle at all engine temperatures.

Here’s my car info:

Chevrolet wagon 1957

Fresh rebuilt 283 engine (bored to 4 inches : 302 cu)

Mild cam

Stock heads

Edelbrock performer alu intake

To resume, a nearly stock engine.

I don’t have any others ideas, please I need some advices.

Thanks

Next time it starts giving you problems record a Datalog and share here.  Must use Dropbox to share a datalog.

Hi,

Here's the log files. The first one is a cold start at 60F and the second one is a warm start at 130F.

As you can see in the second log, the car does start but runs way too rich.

I hope that the data reveal some clues...

Thanks by the way for this very helpful forum.

Data doesn't make sense.  When cold all looks decent.  When warmed up your vacuum goes to almost nothing.  How can that be?

What I don't understand also is why the "run state" is "crank" even if it runs.

Also the AFR trim % is at 0 even if the AFR is very far from the target.

Yep, saw that too.

How did you do your grounds? I do 2awg battery to block, 10awg battery to frame and 10awg battery to body.  This has never failed me on a Fitech.  Also keep all wires away from coil and plug wires.  The blue wire is the most important.

Of course none of this has anything to do with temperature.  ??????

Problem solved.

Fitech sent me a new software to update mine. After the update I re-enter the initial values and it started right up. No more problem of warm start, it runs like a charm. I can finally enjoy my ride !

That is crazy.  Should have offered that to you.  Never crossed my mind.  I have all the Software.  Lesson learned....

Hi Austin, I'm having a similar issue.  I am running EZ street, and the idle is very rich when warm and vacuum goes very low.  The 1/4 mile times are great, but anything below 1500rpm is an absolute mess.  I am going to change plugs and relearn, but I was wondering if there is a newer version of the firwmware for the EZ Street 600 Hp system.  If there is, how can I get it?

Thanks!  Your posts are very helpful.

Go to "Write to Ecu" menu.  Look at default files.  3 digit number with letter. If not 198i, then we have better software.
