ECU Failures - Possible cause or just unlucky?

Hi all,

We have fitted a FiTech 30003 EFI system with the 50001 Inline Frame Mount Fuel Delivery Kit to a 241cu in Rover / Buick V8 in an MG B sports car. There have been problems with the system and we would really appreciate any info that might help us avoid these issues happening in the future. Below is a summary of the issue that we have encountered:

We initially fitted the FiTech system and started the car up. It worked great for about 20 mins during the initial set up then worked for about 40 miles before the orange wire stopped sending power signals to the fuel pump and the car died. After much head scratching we sent the 30003 unit back to the local FiTech agent who confirmed the ECU was faulty and fitted a new computer.

The new computer was fitted and the system worked perfectly for roughly the next 600 miles but the car began to cut out intermittently. We initially put this down to tuning issues and started making all sorts of adjustments in the tuning set up but the intermittent cutting out never went away. Over the next 400 miles or so this became progressively worse until the car would not run at all. Turns out the issue was unfortunately a recurrence of the above ECU fault with the unit not sending power to the orange wire to fire the fuel pump.

So we are now on to ECU unit number 3 and the car is back running perfectly. However we are nervous that we will have a repeat of these previous failures.

Has anyone else experienced these problems and can point to some probable causes of the ECU failures that we need to address?

I was thinking the failures may be a result of high under hood temperatures but the car has never run particularly hot. You can still just about touch the inlet manifold with your hand when the engine is at temperature and not get burnt. I also wondered if it could be a voltage problem but we fitted a new alternator at the same time as the first ECU and the voltage regulation seems to be okay. We have read about earlier versions of the unit having issues with the plugs melting on the orange wire but ours is only about a year old and has the larger updated plug. Is there something wrong with the car or install that is causing this or have we just been unlucky?

Overall we are really happy with the system which is awesome when it works, however with two ECU failures in circa 600 miles we don't want to be left stranded again!

Really appreciate any suggestions.

Many thanks!

Inline Fuel pumps generally cause issues if they are made in China. Switch to a ether a intank ( better) or inline fuel pump made by Walbro ( USA Made ) Also wire up a relay inline to the fuel pump so the Fitech just triggers the relay and the relay provides power to the pump directly from the battery. Your pump is killing the ECU.

Hi SodaPop, thanks for your response - I have bought a genuine Bosch pump and a relay so hopefully that will be the end of the problems. Just out of interest how does the FiTech pump kill the ECU? Is it drawing too much voltage to shorting out or something like that? Thanks again.

Just experienced a failure of my 30003 unit on my MGB V8 - 4.0 litre. Had it installed for nearly three years and about 4000 miles. I'll be interested to know what has caused the failure. There isn't a thermal spacer between the intake (JWR low rise) and the injection unit. Would it reduce the heat transfer to the ECU?
