308 pinging under hard thottle
Quote from podge37 on September 3, 2020, 5:23 amHello need help with 308 Fitech 400 hp go street under normal acceleration the car runs like a dream but does get a little warm but under hard throttle I have a pinging noise coming out of the engine plus motor has only done 30 hrs. Any help with settings would be great.

Quote from bdhulderman on September 3, 2020, 7:13 amYes, you need to get this resolved soon. The reasons why it pings are several:
- Engine too hot
- Timing too far advanced
- AFR too lean under load or at idle causing overheating
A log file would be nice to look at. I set my AFR at 14.2 at idle, seems to keep at good temp, but you need to take a look at your other AFR settings, which should be richer < 14.2. The log file will tell you if your fitech is matching your target AFR. If not, could be fuel delivery problem, like fuel pressure. That's why with these systems it's so important to have a fuel pressure gauge mounted at the fitech fuel inlet. It would be nice to have the gauge under the dash to view while driving, then you would know for sure. If you have your handheld mounted in your car, then you can see if your AFR reading is matching what you set it at.

Quote from podge37 on September 3, 2020, 3:53 pmThanks for the info I will check the AFR and I will try and get log file as I live in Darwin no one in town that knows enough about Fitech so with a bit of luck on this forum I might get there. Cheers mate.

Quote from ajax-1947 on September 5, 2020, 6:24 amPerhaps, mine also runs at about 38psi, without a problem, I think back pressure of the return line has a bit to do with it. Depends how you have the pump hooked up on how it runs. if you have a relay in line it will run full pressure all the time, if you are powered directly to the throttle body it is supposed to slow down [not stop except when it has built up pressure after the prime shot before you crank] when pressure is up and then speed up on demand.
I would be looking at things as if you had a carby on - as earlier suggested timing etc. Depending on your compression, octane rating of fuel your using [don't use that garbage they want us to], check timing with a light, if your running vacuum advance don't be hooked direct to manifold pressure, disconnect to test. Put handheld in the cab to check AFR while you are driving to get an idea of what is happening. I'm in Ipswich, had to get going without any help, relied a lot on the USA folks on this forum.

Quote from podge37 on September 5, 2020, 4:49 pmThanks Ajax so when you turn your key without starting you pump keeps running to and what octane are you running. Am getting close to ripping the system off but I will try for a bit longer it a pity they just didn’t have a set of instruction if had a 308 or a Chevy whatever. Frustrating

Quote from ajax-1947 on September 5, 2020, 11:59 pmelectronic fuel injection is great concept, the instructions suck, they are sold to the bloke off the street but expect everyone to be an expert, I was determined to conquer it, it is not my drive car but still did 2,000 k's test driving before I was happy, still a bit cranky when cold but still plugging away.
No, when I turn the key on the pump runs for 4/5 seconds to purge any air and prime the engine [fuels pours out of the injectors] then stops. I sometimes have to have a second prime to start, when warm starts immediately without prime.
I use 98, I have a couple of good mechanics mates who advised me to, have a 850 mini have use 94 and a 350 corvette use 98, anything less the engines run on after turning off. E10 is for new cars or engines that are specifically built to use.
Is you 308 modified, if you have upped the compression and/or advanced the timing, that is what I would be looking at first, check with a light. Just retard it a bit and test drive. As I said earlier it does not seem to be a Fitech problem, most Fitech problems seem to be associated with putting sensitive electronics under the bonnet of cars that the wiring was not designed for.
