4L80E temp not reading on handheld

Temp on 4L80E is showing -40°f regardless of how long the trans is run. Voltage on trans fluid temp pin on transmission is reading 5v. I'm assuming the sensor in the internal harness is bad but wanted to ask around first. Any ideas? Thanks.
