FiTech EFI 400 idles up and down

PreviousPage 2 of 2

All,

I finally went to the AFR and adjusted down 12.5. Wow, it stopped smoking, no gas smell from the exhaust, and no fuel vapors  emitting from the air hole from the top of the FiTech 400.

For  some reason, I thought it was set at the right range.  Making progress. It is  the best I have seen it run after a year and 4 months.

Thanks

A common misconception with these systems is tuning to an AFR number.  Since we are adding o2 sensors, they are not calibrated to our exhaust system.  Tune with your plugs, then you will have a better understanding what yor AFR readings should be for your combination.

Hello Austin,

Yes, I agree.  I discovered that reducing the numbers increase the fuel, thus causing a rich condition. I still have the up and down. I do not have the smooth idling like a carburetor. Just about read to chunk the Fi-Tech and buy a new Holley!

All,

May have discovered rpm going up and down. My transmission dip stick is close to my PVC valve. When I removed the dip stick, I had to adjust the PVC back and pushed down on it and noticed that up and down idle stopped. Really?? Could it be? I have the PVC with a plastic right angle 3/8 tube connector. I suspect it is leaking there. Looking for a better replacement . The one pictured is very similar to what I have.

Small vacuum leak can do it.  I just worked on a friends truck with TBI and the first thing I did was diconnect and cap all vacuum ports.  This can isolate a leak very quickly.  If it runs good with all capped, start hooking one vacuum hose up one at a time until symptom comes back....

Hello Austin,

I will try that. It has been one devil of a time with this device.

Thanks,

All,

I  vacuum smoked my engine Sunday and NO leaks. Ya!  I finally pulled the Intellitronix CDI box, and lord behold, it is now working properly. Yep, the modified spark box must be sending an erratic or dirty signal to the Fitech 400. Yippe, problem solved!

Thanks to all who have responded to my post!

Good deal.  I have seen a lot of guys with the same issues.  Damn import ignition systems are crap.  All of my installs have timing control so the Fitech only gets a signal from a magnetic pickup.  This greatly reduces any issues.
