Yes, it's pretty critical for successful EFI operation. Interesting that if it's a little off, it cascades into something much worse for it to cause it's own demise. Sounds like if you ever foul plugs, you need to replace the O2. Fortunately, in getting mine running right I went ahead and replaced the O2 whenever the plugs got fouled.
