Initial Start - Starts & Dies

Hello - I'm working on the initial startup with my FiTech 600 HP w/ timing control and using the hyper fuel in-tank pump. The car will currently start and run for 2-5 seconds and then it dies.

I have confirmed the following:

  • White wire has 12v while cranking and key on
  • Fuel pump has 12v while cranking and key on
  • RPM on the dashboard matches rpm on the car's gauge so I don't suspect interference
  • Red wire goes directly to the positive on the battery
  • I have a negative going from the the negative on the battery to the mounting stud
  • I have fuel at the throttle body
  • There are no fault codes being stored
  • I haven't touched any of the default settings outside of the initial setup.

I've spent a lot of time researching this issue and I believe that I've checked all of the normal things that cause a start & die based on that research. It sounds healthy for the 2-5 seconds that it runs then it just dies.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

We figured it out. We weren't getting the needed fuel pressure. This turned out to be because the return line hose in the tank (which is supposed to go all the way to the bottom of the tank) came free of its fitting. So the fuel system was never able to build pressure as it was spraying out above the fuel in the tank.

Got the clamp on it in a better position and it stayed running the first time we fired after that.

so the fuel return has to have a pipe inside the tank to go below the fuel level? I don't remember reading this.
