New install is not running right need some help!
Quote from RyanV on October 8, 2021, 9:35 amTo summarize: My friends car didn't want to start. It was a frame off build with a 396 and Fitech 600. He had 2 shops work on the Fitech and it never ran right. Most recently I found the cam setting at Profile 4 which I knew wasn't right for his Edelbrock cam. The car didn't want to start and when it did it sounded like it was misfiring and you had to keep the throttle open manually, and you could see it spitting out black smoke from running so rich. At idle AFR's were 10-11 so I knew something was super wrong with the tune.
Engine:
396 engine rebuilt
Edelbrock 2095 top end kit. air gap intake, performer rpm heads, 240/250 duration at 50 camshaft
mechanical fan *I disabled the fan in the Fitech
Ignition:
MSD 6 AL with MSD 2 wire distributor and a blaster coil
I verified that the MSD rev limit is not enabled. The MSD startup flash sequence indicates the MSD is OK.
The Fitech blue wire is hooked up to the MSD tach wire, so I believe the MSD isn't controlling timing
The Fitech white wire is hooked up correctly. It's getting 11.92V when 'on' and 9.75-10V when cranking so the Fitech is getting power during cranking. *He will be switching to an Optima red top with more cranks amps
Fuel System:
Aeromotive Stealth 340lph in tank universal pump
The fuel pressure is 58psi on the gauge near the fuel filter in the engine bay. *I don't think the issue was the FPR
Fitech handheld tune:
The shop that worked on it set it up to run on cam profile 4. At first I tried changing the tune to profile 2 and 3 and no difference. Still won't start and run right
They also had the Distributor set to 'Tach" *According to Fitech video on Youtube this is correct setting
Update: I got the car running way better. I installed a Bosch 58psi fpr, and loaded a fresh Fitech base map and it fired right up. It was a bit rich so I adjusted the target AFR to 15.2 at idle(it's actually running at 14.2-14.5 ish at idle and off throttle which is great) and the car is running sweet. Under hard throttle AFR's are in the 12s and come right back up to stoich. 'ISC step' came down to 1 all by itself which is great. So far so good.
I also found the throttle linkage (TPS) only reaching 65%, so I got that adjusted so the linkage/TPS can hit 100% throttle

Quote from RyanV on October 9, 2021, 9:23 pmI changed the FPR to a Bosch unit and then s loaded a fresh base map today and it fired up. I then set the target AFR to 15.2 and let it warm up without touching the throttle.
Test drives were successful and its running pretty good now. IAC step is like 1 without having to adjust it at all so all pretty good day. I found the throttle linkage only allowing TPS to hit 65% so I got that adjusted and it's now hitting 99% full throttle, so that's fixed as well.
Oh yeah I set the cam profile to 3 and used TACH setting. Changed the plugs too
Next up.. changing the Dakota digital coolant sensor, checking the thermostat to make sure it's a 180 and changing the clutch fan blade out.
