Next steps after initial start and drive

I haven't been able to find anything definitive regarding the next basic steps after getting the vehicle started and its running stable.

Our car is idling and driving pretty well with the out-of-the-box settings. We've probably put 10-15 miles on it so far. I know that we need to get the IAC dialed in, but that's the only one I know for sure. Do we need to adjust the timing now? I'm not looking for in-depth tuning suggestions. I know that will come later.

Can someone provide a short list of the next things to tackle (such as dialing in IAC)? Or point me to a list if there is one somewhere that I haven't found.

Thanks!

IAC is absolutely the first thing.  I like to see around 15 steps.

Post a datalog here.  That can tell us a lot.  Just a 30 second idle log at temperature.  Must use a Dropbox or Cloud link to post.

Do you know of any reason that the data log wouldn't work? We're following the steps that I've found to get data logs, but there are no log files when we open it up on the computer. Here are the steps we're following:

  1. Run car until to temperature
  2. Navigate handheld controller to Dashboard
  3. Select LogOn in the bottom left
  4. Observe data log confirmation message
  5. Wait 30 seconds while car is running
  6. Select LogOff in the bottom left
  7. Key off until dashboard clears

Following these steps, we have no CSV files in the log_files>Dashboards folders.

Are we doing something wrong?

Try removing the dashboard folder.  Save it on your PC.  Sometimes it won't log if that folder is already created.

Deleting the Dashboard folder allowed us to get a log. The log can be found at the following URL. Note: we've adjusted the IAC steps to 15 as advised.

Note: clicking the link will load the CSV in the browser. If you want to download it to open in excel, you should be able to right-click as save the file as.

We really appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Other than one thing everything else is looking good.  Your temperature is not above 170.  Although the unit is learning, it is also still in warm up enrichment, which will yield an incorrect learn.

If the engine was up to temperature, I have a little advice.  You may need to look at where the CTS is installed.  I prefer near the thermostat on the intake.  Also, it is not uncommon that the supplied sensor is reading low.  I recommend buying a Delco replacement.  It is a common GM sensor from the 80s and 90s.  Example 92 c1500 305tbi.

Yes I intended to acknowledge that. We definitely have the temperature discrepancy issue. Fitech is reading a lot lower than our AutoMeter gauge. We plan to either buy the ACDelco sensor or go through the software update to calibrate it, but haven't decided which path yet.

The calibration option is Fitech's attempt at keeping everyone happy.  They are just as perplexed as we are on why some of these sensors don't read correctly.  It is an issue that have not been able to correct at this point.  I personally don't like the calibration fix, for 2 reasons.  1. The process is tedious and full of possible mistakes.  2. If you calibrate, then need to change sensors one day, you must calibrate all over again.

Yeah we'll go with a new sensor then.

So if all of the initial stuff looks good. What should we be looking to dial in next? We haven't put a timing light on it yet.

Again if there's a page that lists these common things I'm happy to reference that. I just haven't been able to find anything definitive yet.

Working on some videos that will take you step by step.  Coming soon.

Once the temp reading is correct.  Let it learn.  Drive moderately.  Not a Hot Rod yet.  Definately get your timing correct as that will affect the tune.

It wouldn't hurt to start adjusting your AFRs during this time.  I start with idle AFR first.  You can adjust by exhuast sound and vacuum like you would with a carb.  Ultimately want to tune to spark plugs.  Once you have the idle AFR set, you can use this number to help build the rest of your AFR tune.

The 2 areas you will spend the most time in is the Accel menu and Cranking menu.   Read the handheld definitions in the Members Section.  Get real familiar with these 2 areas.

Btw. I just put together a master list of parts and accessories for the Throttle Body units.  This includes the part number for your replacement CTS.  Amazon links are provided and are linked to my Associate Account.  Your support would be appreciated.  Want to keep the website free, but need to find a way to monetize my efforts.  What better way than to piggy back off the world's richest man, Bezos.😁
