Throttle Sticking

Page 1 of 2Next

I have an odd question for anyone that might be able to help.  I have a '74 F100 with rebuilt FE 360 (Edelbrock Performer 4bl intake).  I had some early setup problems, IAC out of whack, 2 exhaust leaks, RPM noise, etc..  With a ton of reading and tinkering I got those early problems cleared up.  Admittedly - I'm NOT a mechanic in any shape or form.  I'm just a tinkerer.  With that said truck runs great!  Never been smoother, easier to start, or stronger,  I'm 98% there.  Here's my new hurdle.  On slow acceleration while cruising or feathering the throttle in traffic the accelerator sticks.  If I bump the gas it'll settle on down.  If I'm in the gas during normal driving and let off it'll settle down.  I assumed it was in the mechanical linkage somewhere.  I lubed everything I can think of and when actuating the throttle while the truck is off you can't get it to stick.  Once running I can get it to stick every time.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Again, I'm very happy overall with the way my truck is performing, but this is a little annoying.

And just because people like pictures...

Do you have a return spring on linkage? I know the Fitech has its own spring, but sometimes it fails to pull closed.

I have the single spring pulling the throttle back to zero.  To be fair it isn't the strongest.  Do you think it simply needs a stronger, or shorter, spring?  I'll try to get a pic to post so you can see.

Also read your TPS on the handheld.  It should say "0" when at idle.  If it doesn't, try pulling on the pedal or linkage.  If still over "0", you may have TPS problem.  I have the same issue with one of my units.  I replaced the TPS with a Delco sensor and it fixed the problem for awhile.  Now doing it again.  I have asked for a solution on the Facebook groups with no answers.  The only way I can fix it is to turn the key off, wait for handheld go blank, and then turn the key back on.  Look to see if TPS is "0". If not, cycle again.  1-3 tries usually fixes it.  One of those quirks.

Btw.  Give yourself some credit.  I know many guys, with decades of experience, myself included, that have issues with the Fitech.  It takes a little different set of skills and knowledge.

Thanks.  I'll give that a try.

BTW - I called Fitech yesterday and they said it's most likely something between the gas pedal and the Fitech unit.  Not that I disagree, I just can't see how.  At any rate, I'll check the TPS and report back.  Thanks again for the help.

How are your motor mounts?  An engine twisting in its mounts will definitely cause temporary binding.

The motor mounts are new with the rebuild but that's good to know.

May have figured it out.  We cut the spring down giving it a little more tension.  Seems to be working better now.

Sorry, didn't realize I wasn't logged in.

TPS was zero.  Looks to have been spring tension.  If this doesn't work I'll report back.  Thanks everyone for the help.

Good deal.  Let us know how the road trip goes.  I have tried to limit posts to logged in members, but still working on it.  This would be a lot easier if websites were built with wrenches and screwdrivers.
