VSS Really Needed?

Wanting to know if the VSS is really needed? I am currently installing an Ultimate LS on a LQ4  6.0L in an '88 Jeep. Transmission is a TH350 and NP205 transfer case.  The transfer case has the speedo cable deleted.  I am feeding the speedometer with a signal from a GPS sending unit.  I have seen LS powered boats  and they do not have a VSS. So what kind of errors/problems will I encounter not hooking up the VSS?

if you have the ls ecu with trans control you will have to purchase some kind of adapter that reads signal from 350 th or u will get errors, also i have the ls ecu without trans control and i still get a vss error, ive tried contacting fitech about, but then they sent email back saying i dont have trans support, which i know but im still getting the error and its messing with it,so good luck tring to figure it out, i sent a pic of what you might need, let me know if you figure it out

The TH350 has the speedo output on the tail shaft which is omitted for the transfer case adapter. My transfer case has a place for a speedo output but has a screw in delete option. Sounds like I may have to reinstall the speedo cable drive. After I get the rig going and find a solution I post it.

I emailed FiTech tech support about the VSS.

Here was my email:

I have an LQ4 6.0L with TH350. The transfer case does not have a
speedometer cable output. I would like to know if the VSS is required
for the Ultimate LS ECU to work properly? If I have to fabricate a VSS
assembly what PPM does the ECU require, and what GM sensor would be
required? Also what size (tooth count) reluctor wheel would I require
with 4.88:1 axle gear ratio and 35" tall tires.

The answer I received:

Sir,
the vss will not be required if you are not using transmission control.
As far as the tooth counter for the reluctor depends on what the motor
is supposed to come with, the fitech has settings for 24x or 58x
reluctor.

Thanks,

John
