Wants to start.... yet will not!

Ok Folks, I am either an idiot, lack the skill to do this, or chasing ghosts… A little background, this is my second car with a FiTech (30001) and the first set-up was truly a plug and play.  Works like a dream and makes the car electric!

Now for #2 (30001), before Thanksgiving the engine would fire, yet not stay running more than a few seconds. Sent to FiTech for a tune up and they found the ECM had an error that could not be fix, thus replaced.  Fast forward 2-months, put it back on expecting it to fire and run…. Nope, I have voltage, tach signal, and spark and when I crank, it acts like it wants to start but will not catch and hold fire.  After 20secs or so, the engine floods and fouls the plugs (soaking wet).  I have turned off prime, and it still looks like it pumping the fuel to it while cranking.  I have turned back the cold start fuel, but to no avail it will not start.  When I open the throttle, it will backfire and shoot flames.

  • Voltage starts at 12.5 and drops to 10.5 after a few seconds. I still can read RPMs on the handheld
  • Good fuel pressure
  • Plug gap .038ish
  • The idle has no pressure from the screw
  • MSD ignition 6AL
  • Timing close enough to get started
  • It ran (just not long) before sending in for tune up; tach signal issue
  • I have reset the program as I have no history and maybe the factory returned with something my engine did not like.

Please help, where do I look, what am I missing, I am stumped!!!

1. Would like to see the voltage stay over 11 during crank.  Rpm will read with low voltage.

2. It will not start with the blades closed.  Screw needs turned in about 1-2 turns.

3. Have you confirmed you have consistent spark during crank?  Will it start and run on starting fluid?

Hey Austin, thanks for the feedback it is appreciated… put a spark tester in each wire and cranked, spark was present.  As to the voltage, how do I increase?  The battery is a little drained due to jacking with the engine.  I need to get a can of ether to see if that can help.  I have 1.5 turns in the blades now.

Seems like i am chasing a ghost!

Thinking I need to go back to a carb to make sure it’s not timing or ignition.  Then start back with FI.

Charge the battery.

If it will run on starting fluid then you know timing and ignition is working.

If it starts on starting fluid and EFI takes over, likely a crank voltage issue
