Won't start after warmed and parked

Page 1 of 2Next

Hello,

I have searched this forum and replied to a couple old threads that were similar issues. Sorry to blow up your forum!

Still learning the system but so far runs great idles good fires up when cold and as long as the temp under 160 or so I have no problems. 160-170 and i park it for 5 mins no problem.  But if i leave it for 20 mins and try to start nothing. If I spray it with some brake cleaner fires right up and runs awesome.  Until I park it again for more than 20 mins. If I let it cool down fires right up.

I have a sbc 350 stroked with a .500 cam 221/226 duration, aluminum heads, msd ignition, maybe 400hp.I'm using timing control with 13° advance at idle. #2 on the cam setting. I have a fuel pressure gauge at the TB that reads pressure 58lbs. No return line using an ls style regulator at the tank. I have turned off prime shot and have played with cranking fuel settings. IAC settings are checked bi-weekly now and always seems a little off?

Sorry to ramble just wanted to get as much info as I could out! Thanks for any help guys.

Heres a pic of the truck for fun!

Maybe you need the prime shot?  Sounds like the brake cleaner is working as your prime shot.  I'm sure others will have opinions as well.  Maybe change your cranking fuel at the different temps?

turn on prime shot set it at half nominal value, use cam setting 3, run 36 total advance, when cold turn idle screw down to below 10 iac and set idle control to 1000 rpm, make small adjustments from there, if it still has issues starting warm cycle key(prime) twice before cranking, if no start cycle 3 times if it starts after priming it several times increase prime and crank fuel,

I will give it a try with the prime shot and see how it goes. You said IAC at 10 when the engine is cold? Can you explain a little more so I can understand your thought? Is that just dumping more fuel? Thank you!

fitech recommends a IAC setting of below 10 steps once the motor hits 160 degrees' or so turn idle screw down till iac is at 10 or below and set target isle at 1000 in the hand held, using cam 3 will richen up the fuel map base line,  I reduced my prim shot value by half and turned my crank fuel up, I am sooooo close I half to barley open the primary's while cranking but it fires right up hot and cold search out those adjustments on you tube there are plenty of videos demonstrating this

I have this same problem in my 67 c10.  It is a fuel vaporization issue from the heat, not vapor lock.  I pulled a plug one day when it wouldn't start after setting 30 min.  It was dry after multiple tries.  I maxed my prime shot and all my cranking fuels.  I have never had another no start situation since.  It starts rich sometimes.  I plan to reduce afterstart to offset.

Sooooooo..... I'm about ready to try and find someone to take this to or put a carb on. Except I can't find anyone that will dyno Fitech or work on it.lol

I have tried everything and thought I had it until it sat at 160 degrees for 30 mins came back and it would crack then immediately shut down. I maxed out prime shot rolled the key three times nothin. Rolled the key 4 or 5 times and after multiple attempts it fired. Took ten minutes to fire. Was increasing crank fuel  up to around 80 from 45 to 50 and it didn't seem to matter. Increased afterstart fuel in the same way and didn't seem to care. I feel like it fired eventually on luck, not my settings I kept changing....

I am at a loss guys...... I loved the idea that I could "tune" this with timing and afr and whatnot but I never thought I would have so much trouble getting it to start.

I am trying so hard to stay after it and not give up but damn this is frustrating.

does it start any better or worse with throttle cracked

how much timing is it loping over turning slow

what is target afr set it at 13.2.1

I have a 871 blown 545 it don't start up unless I have throttle cracked hot cold dosent matter but fire right up and runs fine crackin the throttle

try cycle the key 3 to 4 times before you crank it this will tell you if your prime is set to low

Any update to this issue?

I have had the exact same problem for months.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.
