Running rich off of idle

PreviousPage 3 of 4Next

I see your IAC steps are very high but I think that is a problem mostly at idle but it's something I see is way off and should be adjusted. I'm old school and don't know much about EFI but that is something I learned from these guys here. Here is what Fitech says about IAC steps.

"IAC Steps:

Turn the driver’s side throttle adjustment screw IN (clockwise) half a turn to start with, with that done turn the key on and go to dashboard and find TPS and make sure it reads zero. If not, then shut the key off and wait for the numbers to go black then turn the key on again. Once that reads zero start the vehicle and find IAC Steps on dashboard. This number needs to be within 3-10 at warm idle. If the number reads zero then slowly turn the screw OUT (counter clockwise) until the IAC steps reads between 3-10. If the number is above 10 then shut the vehicle off and turn the screw IN as stated above and repeat the process until the IAC steps are between 3-10."

Basically I think with the IAC so high you are chocking it a bit and it may be contributing to your problems.

As far as timing you probably shouldn't take my advice but my attitude is if it starts fine and runs good without pinging it is fine.

I don't remember exactly what your setup is but if your reading is in Hg with vacuum that low I would look at the carb/throttle body base gasket first.

Your data is still all over the board.  I can't tell what your idle is set at.  I can't tell what your IAC steps are set at.  I can't help until idle is correct......

Ok guys. I had a super late night last night. But I got a lot accomplished. Better battery voltage, better vacuum (hose came off back of unit), and I blocked off the PCV hose just to help get everything air tight.

I had immediate results!!!

But now, my AFR numbers are a bit low, and yet I get random spikes of the system going way lean until it dies... I have a perfect log of that happening attached. I was able to drive it to the body shop to get a windshield put in before the show tomorrow, but it died on my each way.

My spirits are much higher today, but I need to know the next step. I still need to keep on the pedal just a bit to keep it running.

Ok, the lean spike baffles me right now.  I am sure we will have a Eureka moment.  But, why won't it idle on its own?  Have you adjusted the idle screw?

I turned the idle screw in 1/2 turn a few months back... I don't even remember why. I just know I was told to do that... Should I keep going in 1/2 turn incriments? Then re learn the TPS?

Yes!!!!! You want it to idle on its own and get the IAC steps around 15 at idle and at operating temp.  This is square 1 basics to tuning a fitech.

Ok thanks.

So, after I adjust the screw to get idle, do I reset the TPS? Or do I reset it with every adjustment?

Reset with each adjustment.  Shut engine off, turn 1/2 then startup.  See if it idles on its own.  If not, shut down, repeat another 1/2 turn.  A full turn is as far as I would go.

If you get it too idle, warm to operating temp and check IAC steps.  If high, back screw off until 15 steps is reached.  It will move around a bit, but get close.  You do not need to reset TPS when backing off.  It is already 0.

Once adjustments made, shut off, let ecu power down.  Restart and record a 30 second idle datalog at operating temperature.

So, how did the car show go?

I got the idle problem resolved, not fixed, still have to get the IAC count right, but I made it to the show. It died a few times due to that "mysterious" intermittent lean condition. Found out I was actually loosing fuel pressure, so I have a mechanical problem with my fuel supply... I can figure out physical problems... just this electronic stuff I'm not good at. lol

Anyway, I'm back to having positive thoughts on this FiTech system again.

Car show was a success. Got second place in the 4x4 division. Snapped a couple pics after most of the others left. And I'm pretty happy to win a flask instead of a trophy any day!
